To: President Trump
You took your second oath of office today on the Bible of Lincoln, your Republican predecessor. Lincoln’s second inaugural address included the following text:

“It may seem strange that any men should dare to ask a just God's assistance in wringing their bread from the sweat of other men's faces but let us judge not, that we be not judged. …” (Would Lincoln, given his passion for the Declaration not have agreed that abortion (which wrings the life from one’s baby’s face) is slavery’s twin? Let’s see!)
Lincoln goes on to say…
“Fondly do we hope, fervently do we pray, that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away. Yet, if God wills that it continue until all the wealth piled by the bondsman's two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk, and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash shall be paid by another drawn with the sword, as was said three thousand years ago, so still it must be said "the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether."
Here Lincoln, near the end of the war, is recognizing the moral debt imposed by slavery on the nation.
But years previously he had noticed that this moral imperative had been recognizable long ago in the Declaration of Independence:
“Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”
(The salient words of the Declaration being: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”)
In that Gettysburg address, Lincoln asked the nation to *make sure the soldiers had not died in vain*.
“It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
Would it not be that those soldiers *would have* died in vain if we had not *learned the lesson* of the Declaration’s “created equal” to apply it to the abortion of innocent lives? Remember the early Church was able to abolish abortion in Ancient Rome by invoking the matrimonial imperative for fathers to pick up their babies and provide for them. The Church as an institution grew by the tithing of Christians specifically to provide for the widows and orphans of *martyrs* who died for the faith. We have the Bible today because of that cultural recognition of the imago Dei in each infant conceived.
You ran for president via the GOP party. This party, whose very beginnings vowed to (and did) abolish slavery, and *continued* that virtuous promise to abolish abortion for fifty years until last summer that promise was stripped from the platform at your behest. Previously you had attempted to impose rape exceptions on that platform and had been refused (indicating your greater present sway). But there is also new technology that should be considered to sweep away even the rape exception - every rape father can now be DNA-identified and *garnished for life* to care for mother and child. This punishment alone ought to deter and make rape unthinkable, and therefore wipe rape abortions off the earth! The remaining causes of crisis pregnancy are left to the *choice* of women to abstain from sex or embrace the consequences.
Dobbs stripped the winds of “inalienable” from the sails of “created equal”. States cannot alienate an inalienable right! Do not mistake the vote *against* the Democrat candidate as a mandate for your present (Democrat-leaning) policies. A final quote from Lincoln’s second inaugural is worth considering: ”Woe unto the world because of offenses for it must needs be that offenses come but woe to that man by whom the offense cometh” I ask that you restore the premise and promise of that Grand OLD Party platform, abolish abortion, and so Make America Created Equal Again for the Declaration’s 250th birthday in 2026!
The golden age indeed is coming.
